The Chesterfield Pups

***** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Our capacity is, at most, 40 pups and we now have close to 60! We need to get 20 pups out of the shelter ASAP! We desperately need to move pups out of foster and into forever homes so that our fosters can take new pups from the shelter! There are a lot of adorable pups currently with our fosters, and they have been socialized with people and other animals so they will make wonderful new family members for whoever adopts them :) Please help us free up room so that we can get some of the pups out of the shelter ASAP *****

Located at the Chesterfield Animal Shelter in Chesterfield, South Carolina
The Chesterfield Animal Shelter is a HIGH KILL shelter with only a 12% save rate.

Please help us make that rate MUCH MUCH higher! Dogs currently in the shelter are most urgent but remember that finding permanent homes for dogs currently with fosters opens up slots with those fosters. Pups who are extremely urgent have been identified as such in red. These are pups who have been at the shelter for awhile and, therefore, can be killed at anytime.

Thanks to your help, we have been able to save some of the Chesterfield pups but we need to keep them moving in order to make sure we minimize the number of pups who are killed. Thank you SO much for your help so far!!

Barnesville Animal Control is a tiny facility: 10 runs and four isolation pens fpr dogs, only one bank of very tiny cages for cats which are always full. We have a fabulous Animal Control director, William Perdue. He hates to put anything down, but space requirements are our demon. William will bend over backwards for dogs he knows I am working on, but he must do his job. It thrills him to have animals rescued, and he is very proud of our Petfinder page.

We do temperament and dog test the dogs. I try to spend time with each one and give as accurate a description of their personality as I can. I can worm and vaccinate for Parvo/distemper. We are 12 miles south of Griffin-Spalding County. BAC had a 97% kill rate last survey. We are trying very hard to reduce that dramatically. I am a volunteer with The Humane Society of Griffin-Spalding County, and I pull under their license.

He is in great shape and obviously was someone’s house pet before ending up here. Neutered! Charlie is a year old Pointer-Beagle mix. He’s an unassuming, undemanding sweet boy. Charlie loves all people and gets along well with other dogs. He is not a high energy dog and just loves to hang out with people. He is very affectionate. Charlie has been held over for a week, but he really needs to get out soon. Darling is a friendly, very happy pitbull girl. She is a gorgeous dog who wiggles all over when people are near. Thought to be an owner reclaim, but they never came for her.

Sweet, gentle Mary has already been at animal control for a week and her time is up. Mary came in with her 3 pups, who were rescued, but Mary remains in grave danger of euthanasia. She is only about a year old and weighs about 25 pounds. Mary is a Lab and terrier mix. She is very sweet with people and other dogs and loves to cuddle. She just wants to lay in your lap and have someone care about her. Please consider rescuing or adopting this gentle dog.

Known as the “East State St Dog” or the “Feral Dog”, he finally has a name and it is BOB. Bob showed up near a very busy intersection in the city of Athens following the tornado that swept through the county mid September. Call after call came into the shelter about this poor shepherd sleeping under the guardrails on the highway.  Attempts to capture him were made by the shelter and FOSD but the dog traveled fast through the wooded areas and without hesitation across the highways and narrowly averting the semis barreling along. The part of St Rt 33 where he was seen is often used by farming communities in the area and many of them heavily damaged or almost obliterated by the tornado.

After a wide community effort the dog was cornered behind Bob Evans restaurant and the wardens came with a catchpole, hooked him and took him to the shelter for his own safety and for running at large.

No one called to claim Bob and Bob is not doing well at all in captivity. He has been extremely frightened when people approach his kennel and he barks and cringes to the rear wall. There has never been a dog in this shelter as frightened and sad as Bob. He is no longer considered to be feral but displaced and suffering from anxiety,lack of trust in humans and horrible panicky fright.

Bob is considered to be an unaltered Shepherd mix of around 3 years old. He is sturdily built but a medium dog and around 45#. Bob does not appear to have incurred any visible injuries as a result of the dangerous way he was living , nor does he seem to have any sort of infection nor illness.

FOSD is going to feature Bob in the weekly Athens Messenger dog ad tomorrow in hopes that he is reclaimed or we can get some info about his owner.

If he is not reclaimed, then Bob needs a rescue to save his life. It is not thought he will be alive by the first part of next week. The wardens do not keep “unadoptable to the public” dogs around long. Please consider helping this little guy if he is not reclaimed because they sure are not going to let him be adopted. Bob is for rescue only.

Bob does not appear to be an aggressive boy…but he is afraid. Only the wardens are permitted to handle him because of his unpredictability and because nothing is known about him. He has not been evaluated with other dogs but one of the wardens will assist to help answer any questions a rescue may have.

This poor dog is suspected to be a victim of the tornado. For over two weeks after the tornado – he was living on the East State Street exit ramp between Applebee’s and Bob Evans – sleeping under the guardrail and going back and forth across the highway to the restaurants. It seems like he was waiting for his master to come back and pick him up.

He was caught and has been at the dog shelter for almost three weeks. He is very scared – but in good physical shape. He is approx 45 lbs and looks like a small black shepherd.

His time at the shelter is limited since he has been there for so long. PLEASE HELP IDENTIFY him by calling the shelter immediately (593-5415) if you know who he belongs to AND sending us an email at friendsofshelterdogs@yahoo.com (yahoo.com). He is not available for adoption to the general public because he is so frightened so his options are limited. It would be a godsend for him to find his owner.

If you are not able to save a life by rescuing or adoption, please consider:

(1) Crossposting this plea so that others might have this opportunity; or

(2) Sponsoring a dog by offering to donate money to the rescue which saves them.
Please let the volunteers know the amount and ID number(s) of the dog(s) you wish to sponsor.
Sponsorship most definitely saves lives by allowing a rescue group with room but not enough money
to bring a dog into their group. If a rescue saves “your” dog, you will be given contact
information for the rescue so that you can make your donation.

(3) Donate to a fund to pay for veterinary care for animals who arrive at the shelter
severely injured or sick so that they do not have to suffer while they wait for rescue:
